Today’s elaborate and interactive Google Doodle celebrates the 107th anniversary of Winsor McCay’s comic strip, Little Nemo, with each slide featuring a letter from the world ‘Google’.
It features the eponymous six-year-old character and recreates his fantastical journey to reach the Princess of Slumberland, the daughter of King Morpheus. Way ahead of its time, this weekly comic strip only ran on Sundays in the New York Herald from October 15, 1905 to July 23, 1911.
Winsor McCay was heralded as a trailblazer and redefined what the medium could do, setting a standard, which was followed by Walt Disney in the decades that followed. He died July 26, 1934, of a cerebral embolism.
