Youtube has managed to create celebrities such as Esmee Denters and Marie Digby. It also managed to pluck Zee Avi out of obscurity and have her signed to Brushfire Records (partly owned by Jack Johnson) and have her tour with Pete Yorn for a few months in 2009.
Now if that doesn’t have wannabe singers everywhere to start singing into their webcams I don’t know what will, but you better have the singing chops that Zee Avi does to stand out from the crowd.
I first heard her version of Morrisey’s up-tempo First of The Gang To Die, that she turned into something smoky and electric: it created an instant fan out of me.
Born in Miri, Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, Zee Avi moved to Kuala Lumpur when she was 12. Armed with a guitar or a ukulele, she churned out videos and was soon receiving fan mail and offers from a slew of record labels.
Her single Bitter Heart” was first available on the US iTunes store and her self-titled debut album was released on May 19, 2009. Avi’s song Monte was also featured in the second season finale of Private Practice.
The Malaysian songstress will be coming around to Singapore as part of Noise Singapore’s Noise Talks. She’ll be talking about her musical journey and will close the session with an acoustic performance.
Check her out 18 March 2010 at Singapore Management University. Other speakers include adland man, Rob Campbell and creative publisher Kelley Cheng.
