The story about one man’s quest to draw Every Person In New York. His name: Jason Polan.
Manhattan-based artist, Jason Polan, has over a span of two years drawn 8,300 New Yorkers, one tenth of one percent of the population of the city. His project “Every Person In New York” involves committing every living person in New York to paper.
“I came up with the title ‘Every Person in New York,’ and it just sounded like such an all-encompassing, ridiculous idea,” Polan said.
A freelance illustrator, Mr. Polan moved to Manhattan from Michigan in 2004. His drawings range in detail, with some fleshed out portrait style, and others a series of quick lines, with a simple defining detail: a big hat, umbrella, a wild haircut. He describes his motivation as wanting “to do a project where I could interact with a lot of people and make it something where I wasn’t putting them into an uncomfortable situation.”
