Big Fat Standards – Update: Video of Matt Lauer’s interview with Lizzi Miller

When Glamour magazine ran an image of plus sized model Lizzi Miller in its latest issue, it got most of the world rejoicing. Why so triumphant?

An article by Penny K

Females all over the world were pumping fists and whooping at the sight of plus sized model 20-year-old Lizzi Miller’s ab flab hanging over a skimpy red thong and nothing much else. 0814-lizzie-miller_vg_01

Dramatic responses even include teary eyes. Others felt triumphant about finally “finding themselves” in a magazine. Miller’s appearance is the portrait of reality women with a size (the non size 0 ones) have been yearning for all time.

It’s a good step forward as it promotes a sense of reality. It sends out the message that not all women have legs that go on forever, not all of us are natural born waifs but it’s ok – that we’re humans too, not just pears or apples or what have you.

Yet it’s still troubling: Lizzi is plus sized but she’s super hot. A guy friend David remarked, “I sure wouldn’t mind dating her!” So is this the new standard? If you’re not thin better make sure you’re drop-dead gorgeous?

Update: Matt Lauer speaks with Lizzi Miller and Editor-in-Chief of Glamour, 24 August 2009.
