Starting a new morning regime can help boost your energy levels and help you feel better about the early hours you used to dread.

Not all of us are morning people, that’s no news. Prior to my full time job which requires me to wake up at 6am every morning, I was never the type to be up before daybreak. In fact, I could be found in bed till at least noon. It was a bad habit I cultivated over my years in college sleeping late and waking up even later. By the time I officially started work, I was in such a heavy sleep debt that every morning for two weeks I felt there was no reason to be alive.
In our busy lives, getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep is as achievable as a fairy tale coming true. Most of us make do with 6, others get less. For the anti-morning this could make fore some seriously miserable days ahead.
I believe there’s a way to counter this. It may not work for everyone but it certainly works for me. I do, however, recommend getting into a morning routine that works for you. Routines can be comforting as they occur on a daily basis and require little thinking or even effort.
- Rise and shine (or not, depending how grumpy I am that morning)
- Down a glass of water
- Brush my teeth, wash my face, take a warm shower
- Put on makeup
- Breakfast (no coffee as I save my dose of caffeine for the later morning or afternoon when I feel sleepy)
- Leave the house
As you can see, my morning regime isn’t anything out of this world, but it’s precisely for this reason that it works so well for me.
Once you’ve come up with a morning regime of your own, try to stick to it for 2 weeks and you’ll find yourself slowly becoming that morning person you never were. Soon enough, you’d appreciate the mornings more and feel like you want to add more to your routine. Exercise like a slow morning jog or taking walks are good ways to jump-start your body without sapping the energy you need for work or school later.
Think of your morning regime as building blocks that you can constantly build upon and add activities to. To start simple is the best way to create a solid foundation for your morning regime, but with ample rest at night, you would want to make the best out of your mornings since your mind is at its freshest then.
Starting your day early and making the most out of it means ending it early because you will get tired at the end of the day, and the cycle goes on. It’s no fun being in a sleep debt, nor being a slave to the ZZZ Monster. Save yourself while you still can!
