Battle of the Breakfasts

  • SumoMe

Dedicated to bringing you only the best, Penny had 4 breakfast meals offered by fast food joints McDonald’s (McD’s), Burger King (BK), Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Long John Silver’s (LJS) tried and tested.

An article by Penny K

They were judged according to a set of criteria:

–          Price; value for money
–          Taste
–          Packaging and mobility
–          Frills: sides, condiments and choice of drink

Brings back memories?

McD’s Big Breakfast $6.70
Comes with: English muffins, a chicken sausage, scrambled eggs and a hashbrown
Drink: Tea / coffee / orange juice

Yup! – A perennial favourite of Singaporeans, this breakfast meal comes with quite a spread. Besides, you can’t go wrong with an English muffin.

Oh. – Chicken sausage is on the salty side and the scrambled eggs taste like they’re straight out of an instant mix.

Chew on it! – Is the Big Breakfast really that big? Isn’t it the contents of a burger/sandwich spread out onto a plate?

Almost home made!

Almost home made!

LJS’ French Toast with Turkey Ham and Egg $5.10
Comes with: French toast with turkey ham and egg and a hashbrown
Drink: Tea / coffee / iced lemon tea

Yup! – 2 thumbs up for the French toast. It’s got the taste of a home made breakfast which fills the stomach and comforts the heart. Packaging is also the simplest of all which means we’re paying less for fancy packaging and we save the earth!

Oh. – The hashbrowns were tasteless and were a little rough.

Chew on it! – If it tastes like a home made breakfast, should I be paying for it?

Waffle Love

Waffle Love

KFC’s Waffle and Eggs $4.80
Comes with: Two waffles with scrambled eggs
Drink: Tea / coffee

Yup! – The waffles ain’t bad and at $4.80 (cheapest of them all) it’s good value for money. The waffles are sizeable. The scrambled eggs from this meal tastes better than the one offered by McD’s Big Breakfast – you can quote us on that!

Oh. – There was nothing bad about it.

Chew on it! – Do waffles and eggs go together? Some of us at Penny had a hard time putting those two into our mouths concurrently.

Who doesn't love mini hash browns?

BK’s Croissanwich $5.95
Comes with: A croissant with turkey ham, cheese and eggs and a serving of bite-sized hashbrowns
Drink: Tea / coffee

Yup! – The cheese is melty and tasty and the turkey ham here beats the one in LJS’ French toast meal. It’s thinly shaved and is closest to premium parma ham. The packaging is good so it affords mobility.

Oh. – First its name is a challenge to most Singaporeans; remember it’s \krwä-ˈsäⁿ\ not “croi-sant”. The pastry is bland.

The Verdict:

BEST VALUE FOR MONEY: KFC’S WAFFLE AND EGGS

BEST MOBILITY + BEST FRILLS FOR HASHBROWNS: BK’S CROISSANWICH

BEST TASTE (OF HOME): LJS’ FRENCH TOAST WITH TURKEY HAM AND EGG

PENNY’S FAVOURITE: MCD’S BIG BREAKFAST

  1. Wow! As soon as the fasting month ends I’m going to try the LJS toast. It looks really good :)

    • Some of these places like McDonald’s serve breakfast at 6am – that’s when you can eat, if we’re not mistaken?

More foodie write-ups and reviews coming up!

  2. never looked at fast food breakfasts with this much lust before… good move with the disclaimer LOL
